Railway tracks brought back a flood of memories. He would travel at least thrice a year by train from boarding school to home and back. Steam locos were dominating railway scene those days; electric and diesel locos were few are far between. Steam engines belching coal dust laced smoke whistling sonorously at bends, were his favorites. He would crane his neck out of window to catch a glimpse.
In a time conscious society, I miss those days when a delayed arrival would bring such spontaneous joy, because it would imply a delayed reporting at boarding school. Times were simple then.

Nice nostalgic piece. I love the last bit about late arrivals meaning being late for boarding school. Sounds like the narrator is more about the journey than the destination!😊

I really like the dust laced smoke. And as someone whose heart sank when going back to day school, the same heart goes out to the boy who is glad of the delayed arrival back to boarding school.

Interesting glimpse of an experience I never had–boarding school, and getting to be late 🙂 Made me smile.

Bygone days always seem simpler.
Trains usually arent on time and the time spent are worth the experience.

Thank you for reading. Bygone days are looked through the eyes of a boy who has to go to boarding school. You are right that past looks better, reality of the time may be different.

I like the excitement over a late arrival! I wish I’d had a chance to see the steam era. Steam engines always seem to have more “character”.

True. Because of global warming, steam engines have been replaced almost completely in India by electric and diesel.

Train travel is pretty common in my part of the world. Though these days many travel by plane and car, still train carries a lot of passenger in a cost effective manner.

The feeling of nostalgia is palatable and transcends the boys desire to delay his return to school. Nicely done.

Such an impact in that last line… I feel a nerdy boy being bullied growing up to a man who are always stressed for time.
