Get up and get ready,” pronouncement the sentree. Eldest son of emperor Shahjahan, heir to the imperial throne, Darrah Shikho, is an ordinary prisoner today. Lost one battle after another, before the prince was betrayed by his host, Nawab of Sind.

Darrah sat down to offer his morning prayer. Light of the morning sun, coming through the opening overhead, lit his face. Certain to be executed for rising against the emperor, Darrah was at peace with himself. He readied himself for the long march ahead. Only, if he knew what life had in store for him.

Fate is fickle. Yesterday’s prince is today’s prisoner.

    1. True fortune really changed for Darrah Shikho. He lost battles with imperial army. He was betrayed. Then when reached Delhi as a prisoner, he was paraded on an elephant back and eventually executed. Thank you for reading.

      1. Mother’s did not have much say in the matter of succession. Unless she was the favourite of the emperor. In this case, Mumtaz Mahal, in whose memory Tajmahal was erected, was dead. Father Shahjahan was taken prisoner by Aurangzeb, who declared himself to be the emperor.

  1. There’s a lot going on here. A son forsaking a future of power and fortune to rise up against his father. A father executing his son. A prince turned criminal. The emperor must have been terrible with the promise of more horrors on the way for Darrah to feel the need to act now and sacrifice himself.

    1. It is more complex. Darrah Shikho had little choice. As the eldest son he was to be the emperor. But his brother had rebelled, taken his father prisnor, and declared himself the emperor. Now Darrah had two choices. Either to fight or to renounce. Either way, his life would not be spared because he can always comeback as a contender.

    1. Thank you for reading and commenting. It is my imagination that his faith gave him peace. I have no way of knowing. What is historical fact is that Darra lost, captured and executed by his brother, the emperor.
